On July 21, 2025, the Trump administration released over 230,000 pages of FBI files related to the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The massive document dump includes internal memos, witness reports, surveillance records, and details from the international manhunt for James Earl Ray, the man convicted of King’s murder. The files also contain claims from Ray’s former cellmate suggesting a possible conspiracy.
While some praised the move as a step toward long-overdue transparency, the King family responded with caution. Martin Luther King III and Bernice King welcomed the release but urged the public to approach the material with empathy and care, citing the emotional weight of the documents and lingering questions about the true circumstances of King’s death. They reiterated their belief that Ray may not have acted alone, referencing prior findings that suggested a wider plot.
